Dubai World Cup this Saturday
We have come a long way since the inaugural Dubai World Cup in March of 1996. The previous year, Cigar had taken the racing world by storm, winning eight grade 1 races including the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He won the 1996 Donn Handicap and headed to Dubai to compete in a race offering an unimaginable $4 million purse.
The Canterbury Racebook was packed. It was a Wednesday morning. A Wednesday morning, and the place was packed and full of anticipation to watch Cigar in the richest race in the world. This was before internet betting and watching races on a hand held device. People actually got together to talk and argue horse races and share an experience; even on a Wednesday morning.
For those not familiar or too young to remember, Cigar did not disappoint that morning.
You can hit our Racebook early this Saturday for the $12 million Dubai World Cup! We will have the coffee on. It is time to start sharing these experiences once again.
Some of the world’s best horses will compete at Meydan Racecourse for total purses of $35 million.
