With a purse set for $146,400, the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity is Canterbury’s richest quarter horse race and second richest race of the season. The 350 yard dash features 2-year-olds who had the fastest qualifying times from the June 16th trials (featured below).

Maghelene also boasts a fancy family history. Her dam, Belle Helene was second in the 2013 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso and has career earnings of over $200,000. Belle Helene is also a half-sister to A Revenant, who won the 2016 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) and earned over $600,000 in four career starts.
Trainer Jason Olmstead added that Maghelene is “a classy filly that we had a good feeling about heading into trials and we hope to see her come back with a win.”

Fastest qualifier Mildred Didrickson is going to be the horse to beat in the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity. She broke her maiden at Remington Park by a length before winning her Northlands trial impressively by a length and a half.

Shes Sizzling was impressive as the winner of the final trial, but keep in mind that the track was tightening up and getting faster as the day went on following a drizzling trial morning.
QUARTER HORSES’ DAY

The quarter horses are front and center on today’s card, kicking it off with five consecutive races, four of them stakes races highlighted by the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity with a purse of $146,400. The Futurity will be run as the fifth race on the card.
The Bob Morehouse stakes, worth $40,400, will be run as race two, followed by the Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile with a purse of $20,000.
The Derby is scheduled fourth on the card and is worth $78,450.
The 3-1 morning line favorite in the Futurity is Mildred Didrickson, trained by Jason Pascoe and ridden by Nakia Ramirez. They will break from the No. 6 hole in the 10-horse field.
Pascoe is most concerned with horses trained by Jason Olmstead and Tracy Charette-Hill.
Olmstead’s best entry, Maghelene, is breaking from the No. 1 hole under Cristian Esqueda at 5-1. Miss Energy, trained by Charette-Hill, is 9/2 out of the No. 2 hole. “Those are two very good horses,” said Pascoe. “I think those are the ones for us to worry about.”
Pascoe will use Ramirez, a newcomer at Canterbury, in this premier event . They hooked up during Remington Park’s last meet.
“She’s very professional,” he said. “She came up here to ride all of ours and has done an excellent job.”
Olmstead will saddle the 6/5 favorite in the Morehouse, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust. He’ll also saddle 5/2 favorite First of 15 in the Derby. Charette-Hill has the 3/1 morning line pick in the Juvenile, Chocolatepaintedkiss.
