Sugar Rushh won the $23,200 North Star State Derby by a head Thursday at Canterbury Park, covering 400 yards in 20.688 seconds. The 3-year-old, who did not break from the gate alertly, is trained by Jason Olmstead and owned by Paul Luedemann’s Summer Run, Inc. Armando Alvidrez was aboard the winner who caught stablemate Averys Treasure just before the wire. Redhotmamma finished third. Sugar Rushh paid $3.80 as the wagering favorite.
“I wasn’t thrilled with the hop at the start,” Luedemann said. “But I knew the 400 yards wouldn’t hurt her.”
The favorite also won the $22,600 North Star State Futurity. Kiss My White Socks, trained by Patrick Swan, powered away from the field to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 15.823 seconds for 300 yards, the first victory of his career. The 2-year-old, who paid $3.00 to win, is owned and was bred by Dan Kjorsvik. Alfredo Triana Jr. rode the winner. Earlier on the card jockey Luis Fuentes notched his 500th career victory when Cliff Diver won the third race.
